Electric Cactus 5x7 Print
From March to May you can find cacti blooming all across the Rio Grande Valley. Fiery red, pink or yellow flowers grow off of the different species. For the prickly pear, these flowers turn into the delicious sweet fruits, or “tunas” of the plant.
To me, cacti are a symbol of strength and resilience. They evolved to create a spiny barrier between them and the outside world, keeping them from harm and pricking those that come too close. Although they are seemingly dangerous due to their needles, they are drought resistant, using their unique process of CAM photosynthesis to only open their stomata at night, and they grow the most delicate flowers. This piece is for anyone who has ever felt the need to protect themselves. We see your resilience. We see your strength. May you still bloom, and may we see all your flowers.
This paper cut took hundreds of hours to complete. The red outline is cut from one sheet of paper while the flowers have been filled in with other bright colors. The red hatching and green of the cactus vibrate together, making what I experience as electricity.
This is a 5x7 numbered print of the original paper cut piece.
